چکیده

We present the first algorithm to compute the geodesic Fréchet distance between two polygonal curves in a plane with polygonal obstacles, where distances between points are measured as the length of a shortest path between them. Using shortest path structures that we call dynamic and static spotlights, we efficiently construct and propagate reachability information through the free space diagram to solve the Fréchet distance. We also show how to construct a novel shortest path map from a line segment source (instead of from a point source). This shortest path map supports geodesic distance queries from any point s ∈ ab to any point t ∈ cd in optimal logarithmic time and permits the shortest path to be reported in output-sensitive fashion.

On the Geodesic Diameter in Polygonal Domains∗

A polygonal domain P with n corners V and h holes is a connected polygonal region of genus h whose boundary consists of h + 1 closed chains of n total line segments. The holes and the outer boundary of P are regarded as obstacles. Then, the geodesic distance d(p, q) between any two points p, q in polygonal domain P is defined to be the (Euclidean) length of a shortest obstacle-avoiding path bet...

Coordinating Team Movements in Dangerous Territory

Suppose a two-member team is required to navigate through dangerous territory (a plane with polygonal obstacles) along two preselected polygonal paths. The team could consist of police officers, soldiers, or even robots on the surface of Mars. Team members are allowed to coordinate their movements, and it is imperative to keep the team close together during the mission so that if an emergency o...

Min-Link Shortest Path Maps and Fréchet Distance

We present shortest path maps that support min-link queries from any source point on a line segment to destination points in either a simple polygon or a polygonal domain (a polygon with holes). These structures are more versatile than the traditional shortest path map from a fixed source point, and we use them to compute the min-link Fréchet distance between two polygonal curves. In addition t...

Geometric Spanners for Points Inside a Polygonal Domain

Let P be a set of n points inside a polygonal domain D. A polygonal domain with h holes (or obstacles) consists of h disjoint polygonal obstacles surrounded by a simple polygon which itself acts as an obstacle. We first study t-spanners for the set P with respect to the geodesic distance function π where for any two points p and q, π(p, q) is equal to the Euclidean length of the shortest path f...

New Results on Trajectory Grouping under Geodesic Distance ∗

We study grouping of entities moving amidst obstacles, extending the recent work of Kostitsyna et al. [5]. We present an alternative algorithm that can compute the Reeb-graph, a graph which captures when and how the partition of the entities into groups changes, when the entities move amidst arbitrary polygonal obstacles. Our new algorithm is significantly faster than the algorithm of Kostitsyn...
